AFCON 2019: CAF approves 24-team Format

AFCON 2019: CAF approves 24-team Format

Confederation of African Football (CAF), at its meeting on Thursday in the Moroccan capital Rabat, announced that the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) will be held in June and July.

The tournament is usually held in January and February, causing disputes with European clubs who had to release players in the middle of the season.

CAF also confirmed that the 2019 event in Cameroon will be contested by 24 teams, instead of its usual 16.

AFCON has been participated by 16 teams since 1996 and the competition will continue to be held every two years, in Africa and only with African countries.

The announcements follow a two-day symposium organised by CAF president Ahmad to discuss the state of African football.
